Nurse Catherine Black

Nurse Catherine Black (Blackie) was the private nurse of King George V of England.

She was constantly with him from his first serious illness in the winter of 1928, then installed at Buckingham Palace in her own chambers and remained there until the King's death in 1936.

In her autobiography 'King's Nurse, Beggar's Nurse', she tells her story about her childhood in Donegal, her life in the Royal Household, her visit to nursing centres in the Australian bush and about nursing in Belgium and France during WW II .

Her home was once the Ardeen House (built 1845) on the outskirts of the town.
