If you drive the North coast of Co. Antrim, you will arrive the greatest sight of Northern Ireland,

Giant's Causeway.

These are bizarre vertically standing basalt columns. It has been estimated that 37,000 basalt columns extend from the cliffs into the sea. They are a result of volcanic eruptions 60 million years ago.

The Giant's Causeway is subject of numerous legends. The most popular tells about the giant Finn MacCool who built a path across the sea to see his love on an island in Scotland.

Since 1986 Giants Causeway is a world cultural heritage.

Es sind senkrecht stehende Basaltsäulen. Geschätzt wird, daß 37.000 Basaltsäulen von den Klippen bis ins Meer reichen. Entstanden sind sie vor ca. 60 Mio. Jahren durch Lava-Ausbrüche.

Um diese bizarren Säulen entstanden viele Legenden. Die bedeutenste berichtet vom Riesen Finn MacCool, der einen Damm über das Meer baute um zu seiner Geliebten zu gelangen, die auf einer Insel bei Schottland lebte.

Seit 1986 ist Giants Causeway ein Welt-Kulturerbe.
