This ring fort belongs to the most impressive ancient monuments Donegals. It stands just 10 km (6 miles) west of Derry on a hill (240 m). The circular stone structure, measuring 23 m (70 ft) in diameter, has 5 m (15,2 ft) high and 4 m (12 ft) thick walls. It is believed to have been built as a pagan temple around the 5th century BC.
The fort became the royal residence of the O'Neill's.
It was damaged in the 12th century and was restored in 1870.

The fort stands at the entrance to the Inishowen Peninsula, overlooking Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle. If the weather is clear, you have a memorable and fantastic panorama view.

Dieses Ringfort gehört wohl zu den eindruckvollsten historischen Bauwerken Donegals. Es liegt 10 km westlich von Derry auf einer 240 m hohen Anhöhe. Die kreisförmige Steinstruktur, die 23 m Durchmesser misst, hat 5 m hohe und 4 m breite Mauern. Man geht davon aus, daß das Fort ursprünglich im 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. als heidnischer Tempel errichtet wurde. Später wurde das Fort die Residenz der O`Neills. Im 12. Jh. wurde es zerstört und 1870 restauriert.
Dieses Fort ist das Tor zur Halbinsel Inishowen und überblickt den Lough Swilly sowie den Lough Foyle. Bei schönem Wetter hat man von hier einen unvergesslichen weiten Rundblick.
